The IIHF World Championship Format and Schedule for 2022

Understanding how the format works will undoubtedly help you decide which bets to place. Teams in the Championship division will compete in a preliminary round comprised of two groups: Group A and Group B.

Group A will play their preliminary games in Helsinki, while Group B will play in Tampere, both of which are major Finnish cities. During the preliminary round, each team will play individual matches against every other country in their group.

The two groups are as follows:

A Group

  • Austria
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Kazakhstan
  • Slovakia
  • Switzerland

Group B

  • United States
  • France
  • Czech Republic
  • Finland
  • Great Britain
  • Latvia
  • Norway
  • Sweden

The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals after the preliminary round. The matchups will be as follows.

  • No. 1 Group A team vs. No. 4 Group B team
  • No. 1 Group B team vs. No. 4 Group A team
  • No. 2 Group A team vs. No. 3 Group B team
  • No. 2 Group B team vs. No. 3 Group A team

Four teams will then advance to the semifinals. The second-place semifinalist will face the third-place semifinalist. The top-ranked semifinalist will face the bottom-ranked semifinalist.

Several factors influence the quarterfinal and semifinal rankings. They are as follows:

  • Placements in groups
  • Points from the preliminary round
  • Goals scored in the first round
  • Preliminary round goal differential
  • Seeding in general

The semifinal winners will compete for the IIHF World Championship in 2022. The losing teams from the semifinals will compete for third place.

Here’s some more information about the Championship schedule:

  • Preliminary Round: May 13–24, 2019
  • May 26: Quarterfinals
  • May 28: Semifinals
  • The IIHF Championship Final will be held on May 29.

The results of the third-place and championship games will ultimately determine the top-four teams’ final ranking.

Group A Predictions and Preview

Group A’s top contenders include Canada, Switzerland, and Germany. Canada is regarded as the best overall team and will almost certainly advance to the quarterfinals.

After the preliminary round, the Canadians can position themselves to create favorable matchups. Canada is 14-3 in their last 17 games against Group A opponents.

Canada has had the best overall record when competing for an IIHF title since 2012. This includes three championships, two second-place finishes, and another semifinal appearance.

The matchup will be lopsided regardless of who Canada plays in the preliminary round. Every year, they are a contender for the IIHF Championship. Finally, Canada is expected to dominate the competition in Group A.

B Group

Finland is the team with the best chance of winning Group B. They are now a regular fixture at the Ice Hockey World Championships, having won the title in 2019 and finishing second in 2021.

Finland will undoubtedly make life difficult for the other Group B teams on home soil, particularly when they face the United States and Switzerland. The Czech Republic, which finished third at the IIHF Championship in 2012, will also compete in Group B.

The United States has been especially unlucky, falling just short of competing for a title on multiple occasions over the last ten years. The last time the United States won the IIHF Championship was in 1960.

Finland and Sweden have had the most success in recent years of all the teams in Group B. Since 2011, the two Nordic countries have won five IIHF Championships.

Finald will have their way with the rest of Group A, but countries like Sweden and the United States will undoubtedly make the matches extremely competitive.

Favorite Hockey Players

Before making your hockey betting picks for the 2022 IIHF Championship, research the teams with the best chances of winning. Here’s some key information on the countries that could challenge for the title.

Canada

Canada has a long history of winning the Ice Hockey World Championships, and they are defending their title this year. They’re one of the field’s toughest teams and one of the favorites to win.

What I like best about Canada is its mix of youth and experience. The team can also score effectively, and they will almost certainly put the heat on their opponents on offense. Several Canadian players are expected to launch powerful shots from the point.

Unfortunately, Canada’s national team was eliminated after the Olympic quarterfinals in Beijing in February. The IIHF Championship, on the other hand, will give them a chance to recover and gain momentum.

Consider the teams Canada will face in the preliminary round. In terms of competition, Group A is undeniably inferior to Group B. Canada should easily make it through the preliminary round and into the quarterfinals.

Finland

Finland eliminated Canada in the Olympic quarterfinals back in February. It was an impressive victory over a Canadian men’s team that has consistently performed well in international competition.

Finland is now officially a powerhouse after winning its first-ever gold medal at the Olympics in Beijing against Russia. It was a huge win that propelled the team to the top of the world rankings.

Finland has very few flaws. They consistently outperform their opponents, and the team is extremely well-rounded. Finland also appears to perform best when facing the most difficult opponents.

When you factor in the home advantage, it’s easy to see why Scandinavia is the clear favorite for the upcoming Ice Hockey World Championship.

Sweden

Sweden enters the 2022 IIHF Championship with a lot of confidence after finishing fourth at the Olympics in Beijing. They are currently ranked fifth in the men’s hockey world rankings for 2022.

This group cannot be overlooked. Sweden will most likely continue to be aggressive on offense, forcing their opponents to make defensive adjustments throughout the game.

Sweden’s men’s hockey team is also extremely fierce and competitive. Expect them to put on a strong showing in the preliminary round, putting pressure on the rest of Group B and the other teams they will face throughout the championship.

Predictions for the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship

Sweden will win its third Ice Hockey World Championship since 2017. They have recently found a rhythm, and the team has enough star power to win another world championship.

We also can’t ignore the fact that Sweden is consistently excellent. They consistently perform well at the IIHF Championships, and the team includes several NHL players.

When it comes to Ice Hockey World Championship betting odds, Sweden is the obvious choice, and this is the best price available.
